Первоначально это слово ничего общего не имело ни с pigs (свиньи), ни с backs (спины). Начальная форма этого слова pick-a-pack (подхвати пакет, подними свёрток), которая ещё раньше выглядела как pick-pack (искусственное удлинение слова pack). Имелся в виду ребёнок, которого несут, piggy-back был всегда на чьей-то спине, поэтому произошла смена pick-pack на pick-a-back.
